A wall is a drainage job with a face on it.
Most failed retaining walls in this part of Virginia did not fail because the block was wrong. They failed because water built up behind them with nowhere to go, froze, and pushed. We build the wall on a compacted base, backfill it with clean stone, and run drain pipe behind it so the water leaves before it can load the wall.
We build with segmental wall block and with stone facing, depending on the look you want and how much the wall is holding. Short garden walls that raise a bed, taller walls that hold a bank off a driveway, steps between levels, caps and lights set into the top. Taben will tell you plainly if a wall is taller than it should be without an engineer.
We are NDS certified, which is a drainage certification, and most of our year is spent moving water off driveways and private roads. That is the part of a wall you never see, and it is the part that decides how long it stands.
